This is not an exhibition but you can come and look, talk or contribute.

FOOD is an event where Anarch and artists will cook and host an informal ‘meal’. All welcome until it runs out and then you are still welcome.

Stephen Forge, for his first UK solo commission in collaboration with Anarch, has constructed BRUT, a multifaceted modular structure with contrasting interior and exterior attributes.

At the centre of Forge’s work is the observation of the contemporary built environment and the intersection of art and the social realm. There is a studied genericism that restages ubiquitous materials and forms from architecture and public spaces to essential functional qualities. This reductive language provides clarity to examine these quasi-objects, objects constructed from repeated set of cast concrete tiles that economically create a façade and a perfunctory shell. Here function is prioritized over design, the possibility of mass production is preferable to the singular crafted ornament and form has undergone multiple Health and Safety checks.  BRUT is a modest modular component system that suggests formal management, the histories of architecture and a somewhat British melancholic tone of order.   With Forge’s work it appears that Modernist ideas and aspirations are filtered through the Postmodern age and arrive in the here and now of every British town. 

In the new commission, BRUT, Forge’s new piece consists of an outer shell of polished concrete that has been rigorously worked and reworked to get an industrial like finish. These basic forms with perfect planes and slotting joints have been developed through a labour intensive studio practice where social commentary and the possibility of visual pleasure  are continually  questioned and negotiated. Previously Forge worked almost exclusively with found detritus, this commission signals a recent shift in Forge’s practice towards the man made.

“These manufactured forms tend to grow into sculptures that are influenced by the limitations of their own form, the rules of which determining the outcome of the work.”

Stephen Forge is a final year Royal Academy of Arts and has previously had group exhibitions at The Royal Standard (Liverpool), Embassy Gallery (Edinburgh), Liverpool Biennale 2008, ‘NO SOUL FOR SALE’ Tate Modern (London), The Bluecoat (Liverpool) and Royal Academy of Arts (London).
